Maybe you don’t know Lessi and me good enough to hear what happened to oppi. Or maybe you think you don’t. But that would be a lie. Most people I meet have already heard some version or another. They just don’t hear it from me or Lessi. They might hear it from Grampa. He likes to talk. He says talking helps him have better dreams. When he has bad dreams and sometimes nightmares, he’ll be sure and talk about those to as many people as can stand to listen. I don’t know who all listens to him. Apparently enough to keep him encouraged. I just get tired of it. He gives me a headache. Sometimes he’s so hard to understand when he’s talking, not just the way he talks but more the way he says things. He’s got a few friends, not really friends as much as people who think he’s some kind of puzzle to figure out. So whenever he gets in his talking mood some invisible signal goes off somewhere and they show up and take turns trying to take notes, and that really makes him mad. But still, of all the things Grampa talks about all the time, oppi isn’t one of them. Mama gets all red-faced and then spends a couple of hours cleaning the floors after she talks about what happened. Our house has real clean floors. She’ll talk about oppi, just not what happened. She talks about all the good things she remembers, not like he’s dead, but like she’s trying to fill in the blanks. When a situation or something comes along she’ll recall something similar and how oppi handled it. Only once have I seen her try to do that and she couldn’t because nothing like that had ever happened. So she got mad and started yelling and crying at him because she needed him. She yelled so loud and cried so hard that I expected to see oppi any minute. And I might well have if yelling and crying like Mama did could have made a difference.
