NYC violin repair shop hits sour legal noteSeptember 16, 2009 By The Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — A tiny New York City violin repair shop may have to close because it violates an obscure zoning regulation. The owners of Tanen Violins say the Department of Buildings informed them that their Manhattan shop is illegal in the residential district. The shop is on Broadway — albeit about four miles north of the famous theater district. The same zoning law bans umbrella and typewriter repair shops, wedding chapels and gymnasiums.Buildings Department spokesman Tony Sclafani conceded his agency would not have known about the violin shop if someone hadn’t complained. The agency told Joseph Tanen and his wife, Nancy Phillips, to stop their “illegal” use or face padlocking. The couple say they’ve never tried to hide their business. Their lease spelled out precisely how they intended to use the space.___Information from: The New York Times, http://www.nytimes.comCopyright 2009 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
