that it doesn’t seem as old as it did back in 1970 when I realized he was…
…wait for it…
…30 whole years old!
But next year when we’ll be saying John would have turned 70 today, that WILL sound old, I don’t care what anybody says.
It also sounds incredibly young to say he died at 40, doesn’t it?
What I wonder is how active he would be right now if he were alive.
McCartney is out and about a lot. He performs live a lot. He puts out lots of albums. By contrast, even when he was alive, George was rarely seen, rarely performed, and only sporadically released albums. Where would John have fit in that matrix? Would he have undertaken world tours? Would he have released an album every other year, or once a decade? Would he already be dead of lung cancer or something? Would the Beatles have reunited for an album or tour in 1995 instead of releasing Anthology and a couple of singles?
It sucks to never know.
By the way, I just bought the box set of remastered Beatles CDs. A bit of a splurge, and it isn’t like I didn’t already have the old versions on vinyl, which I had dutifully transcribed to cassette for listening in the car. But the project was overseen by Giles Martin, George Martin’s son, and I was charmed by the creative and sonically wonderful production on the Beatles Love show/CD, so I was willing to take a shot. So far I’ve enjoyed it, although one of the things I did on my cassettes was to add contemporary singles that weren’t included on the albums, which actually happened a lot, so you get a great snapshot of where the Beatles were as a band at the time. On this collection the extra songs appear all together on a separate CD, which I find unfulfilling. Oh well.
